Background of the Study
Electoral malpractices, such as vote buying, ballot stuffing, and intimidation, have long been a significant issue in Nigerian elections, undermining the integrity of the democratic process. Local government elections, often seen as less scrutinized than state or national elections, are particularly susceptible to electoral malpractice due to factors like weak enforcement of electoral laws, low voter turnout, and less transparency in the voting process (Idris & Bukar, 2023). In Gashua Local Government Area (LGA) of Yobe State, such malpractices are reported to negatively influence election outcomes, distorting the true will of the electorate. This study aims to investigate the nature and extent of electoral malpractices in Gashua, focusing on how these malpractices affect voter trust, electoral outcomes, and the overall integrity of local elections (Adamu, 2024). By highlighting the challenges of addressing electoral fraud in this region, the study will seek solutions for ensuring credible and fair elections at the local government level.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Electoral malpractices in Gashua LGA pose significant challenges to the credibility and transparency of local elections. These practices, often carried out by political actors with vested interests, create a cycle of electoral fraud that erodes public confidence in the democratic process (Bala & Danjuma, 2023). The widespread occurrence of vote-buying, ballot tampering, and voter intimidation diminishes the legitimacy of election results, which ultimately discourages citizens from participating in future elections. This study aims to assess the scale of electoral malpractices in Gashua and their consequences for the democratic process.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the prevalence and types of electoral malpractices in Gashua Local Government Area.

  2. To examine the impact of electoral malpractices on voter trust and participation in Gashua.

  3. To identify strategies to mitigate electoral malpractices and enhance the credibility of local elections in Gashua.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What are the types of electoral malpractices prevalent in Gashua Local Government Area?

  2. How do electoral malpractices affect voter trust and participation in Gashua elections?

  3. What strategies can be adopted to reduce electoral malpractices in Gashua?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Electoral malpractices are widespread in Gashua LGA and significantly affect the outcome of elections.

  2. Voter trust and participation are negatively impacted by electoral malpractices in Gashua.

  3. Implementing stricter electoral laws and improving voter education will reduce the prevalence of electoral malpractices in Gashua.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into the scope and effects of electoral malpractices in local government elections in Nigeria. It will also propose actionable solutions that can enhance the credibility of elections in Gashua and similar LGAs, contributing to the broader goal of strengthening democratic practices in Nigeria.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on electoral malpractices in Gashua LGA, Yobe State, and will cover the 2023 local government elections. It will not address other forms of electoral malpractice in other regions or focus on state or national elections. A limitation of the study is the potential lack of cooperation from local electoral officials or political actors involved in malpractices.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Electoral Malpractices: Illegal activities that disrupt the integrity of the electoral process, including vote buying, ballot stuffing, and voter intimidation.

  • Voter Trust: The confidence voters have in the fairness and transparency of the electoral process.

  • Vote Buying: The act of offering money or goods to voters in exchange for their votes, often an illegal practice during elections.
